A moderate route in North Western Fells. Check the GPS track on Outdooractive for full details of the route, waypoints, and terrain.
Starting Point: By the chapel, Braithwaite (NY 228 235)
Terrain: Village road, driveway to Braithwaite Lodge, open fell, ridge path, Barrow summit, descent to Barrow Door, path west below Outerside, path to Outerside summit, descent northeast, wild walk along lower flank of Barrow (easy navigation), path northeast to Braithwaite road, road return through village
A short but satisfying circular from Braithwaite taking in two fine Coledale fells on a single neat ridge-and-return route. The approach via Braithwaite Lodge and the steady ridge climb to Barrow is pleasant from the first steps, with the Newlands valley opening up to the east and Derwentwater and Skiddaw appearing behind as height is gained. Barrow's summit is a fine viewpoint well out of proportion to its modest 455 metres. The descent to Barrow Door and the climb to Outerside is a straightforward and enjoyable horseshoe extension, with Outerside's position at the edge of the Coledale fells giving a good perspective across the whole horseshoe. The return via a short wild walk along the lower flank of Barrow is easy to navigate and a pleasant way to avoid retracing steps, with the path back into Braithwaite making a gentle close to the day. A reliable walk that delivers two Wainwrights and a good deal of Coledale atmosphere for modest effort. Beware….. I made my own path from the col at the bottom of Outerside to the path below, easy enough at this time of year.
