A fine three-Wainwright circuit in the quieter western fells above Wast Water, taking in three summits of very different character across a compact and satisfying round. Buckbarrow punches well above its weight for a fell of 423 metres — its crags give it a personality that many higher fells lack, and the views from the top are already impressive. The walk north to Seatallan through Cat Bields is open and airy, and the summit of Seatallan itself is one of the great quiet places in the Lake District — high enough for a full panorama, remote enough to have it largely to yourself. Middle Fell completes the circuit in style, its position directly above Wast Water giving it views of the lake that are among the finest on any summit in the western fells. The descent southwest to Greendale is steep and direct, bringing a satisfying end to a walk that covers a lot of quality ground in relatively modest mileage.
