This is an outstanding Pennine mountain walk taking in Cross Fell, the highest summit in the Pennines at 893 metres. The route offers superb views throughout, with the Lakeland Fells visible from the high ground. The approach via High Cup provides excellent walking, while the Pennine Way section leads to the vast plateau of Cross Fell. The optional extension to Little Dun Fell and Great Dun Fell adds extra height and interest. The descent via Wild Boar Scar and Grumply Hill is steep but scenic, and the ancient Roman terraces at the Hanging Walls of Mark Anthony add historical interest to the return journey. A classic northern Pennines walk combining high mountain terrain with fascinating historical features.
