Terrain: Rocky paths (hands-on scrambling in places), Cambrian Way, ridge walking, steep sections (uphill and downhill), fairly distinct path (hard to see in places), good paths, crags, disused leat crossing
This is a thoroughly enjoyable circular walk taking in two Hewitts with amazing views throughout. The climb to Tal y Fan involves rocky hands-on scrambling in places, rewarding with stunning views across the Menai Strait, Anglesey, and Snowdonia. The Cambrian Way provides excellent ridge walking via Foel Lwyd, maintaining wonderful panoramas. The steep descent to Bwlch y Ddeufaen and the historic Roman Road adds interest before the steep climb bearing left to Drum, the higher of the two Hewitts. The return route leaves the Cambrian Way, following a fairly distinct but sometimes hard-to-see path along the fenceline via Pen y Castell. The descent through crags is on a good path, followed by the interesting crossing of a disused leat (an artificial water trench from milling days). The final road section drops to the river at Hafoty Gwyn before rising fairly steeply back to the start. A rewarding Welsh mountain walk combining two Hewitt summits with excellent ridge walking and outstanding views.
