A difficult route in Southern Fells. Check the GPS track on Outdooractive for full details of the route, waypoints, and terrain.
Starting Point: National Trust Car Park, Wasdale Head (NY 182 074)
Terrain: Clear valley path, gate, steadily climbing fell ridge path, steeper ridge path, optional route through crags (clear but unmapped), Lingmell summit, descent to Lingmell Col, Corridor Route (mostly good underfoot, occasionally exposed), Piers Gill (danger — do not descend), Greta Gill crossing, Stand Crag, Sty Head path junction, good clear path past Toad How and Bursting Knott, Moses Trod, Lingmell Beck, valley return to Wasdale Head IMPORTANT — MOUNTAIN SAFETY: This is a serious and demanding mountain walk in one of the most dramatic corners of the Lake District. The Corridor Route includes exposed sections and passes Piers Gill — a deep ravine where walkers regularly get into serious difficulty and which must not be used as a descent route. Full mountain kit, good navigation skills and appropriate experience are essential. Check the weather forecast carefully before setting out.
A magnificent circular from Wasdale Head combining one of the quieter and more rewarding Wainwright summits with the celebrated Corridor Route — one of the great fell paths of the western Lake District. The climb up the Lingmell ridge from Wasdale Head is a superb opener, with views along Wastwater and across to the Scafells building from the first steps and never letting up. Lingmell's summit at 807 metres delivers one of the finest panoramas in this corner of the Lakes, looking over the dramatic cleft of Piers Gill to Great End, Great Gable and Kirk Fell, with the great mass of Scafell Pike filling the view to the south. The Corridor Route east from Lingmell Col is a classic high traverse — generally good underfoot but with exposed sections and the genuine serious hazard of Piers Gill, which must on no account be used as a descent route. The crossing of Greta Gill and the path under Great End to Sty Head are among the finest high mountain walking in the area, and Moses Trod provides a fitting and historic return west to Wasdale Head through the grandeur of the valley. A walk of real stature.
