Starting Point: RSPB car park, Geltsdale (NY 588 584)
Terrain: Tracks, moorland paths, wild walking section, indistinct paths, road walking, old railway line
This is an excellent circular walk in the northern Pennines combining archaeological interest with superb moorland walking and outstanding views. The Bronze Age cairn and currick on Tindale Fell provides a fascinating historical element - a landmark visible from the A69 and an excellent viewpoint to the Cheviots, Hadrian's Wall, and Scotland. The linguistic heritage of "currick" and its connection to local place-names adds cultural depth to the walk. Cold Fell (Hewitt) rewards with great 360-degree views, while the quirky cairns on Talkin Fell provide additional interest on the return journey. The route combines wild walking, clear paths, and an easy finish along the old railway line. A rewarding day exploring lesser-known Pennine fells with rich historical and cultural connections.
