💡 Tony's Notes

This is a beautiful circular walk in The Cheviots, my first walk in this stunning area and one I would highly recommend. The route begins with a clear path that's boggy in places, climbing to Hindside Knowe where wonderful views of the Northumbrian hills and countryside unfold. The path bears right over the knowe before continuing past The Street and curving left around Swinside Law's flank. After dropping slightly, the climb to Black Braes rewards with amazing views once more. The Pennine Way is joined at Cross Dyke, starting a bit wet and boggy but quickly improving as it heads north with amazing views of southern Scotland and The Cheviot. A gate by a cairn marks the point where the walk passes through a short section in Scotland before climbing to Windy Gyle's trig point at 619m, back in England. The clear track off the Pennine Way bends slightly left before the right-hand track winds down past a barn to Rowhope, crossing two footbridges on the return with a big smile firmly in place. The Cheviots proved beautiful on this first visit - a walk I would recommend to anyone seeking outstanding hill walking in the English/Scottish borderlands.
