An outstanding point-to-point first day of a two-day Cairngorm 4000ft expedition, completing Cairn Gorm and Ben Macdui before overnighting at the famous Corrour Bothy. Having already bagged Cairn Toul on a previous walk, this expedition targets the remaining Cairngorm 4000ft mountains. The plateau above 1,000 metres is a world apart.

The route onto the plateau can feel relentless but the views from Braeriach's summit — particularly into the Garbh Choire Mòr corrie — are among the finest in Scotland. Don't underestimate the distances on the plateau, where landmarks can be deceptively far apart.

The original plan was a spectacular circular over the famous Arête to Ben Nevis, but weather conditions forced a sensible decision to return the same way, though others did continue over the ridge. Judgement over ambition on Scotland's highest massif.
