Terrain: Road, path to lakeshore, Ullswater Way, northeast shore path under Raven Crag and Whinny Crag, ridge southwest, White Knott, Parton Fell, Arthur's Pike summit, path southwest, Swarth Beck, Bonscale Pike summit, south to High Street Roman Road, Moor Divock stone circle, Loadpot Hill summit, High Street south, Wether Hill, steep northwest descent, Brownthwaite Crag, ridge to Steel Knotts (Pikeawassa), north to Birkie Knott, descent to church
A tremendous circuit of the fells above Martindale and the eastern shore of Ullswater, combining four Wainwrights of considerable variety across a day that takes in lakeshore, ancient ridgeline, Bronze Age mystery and some of the finest views of Ullswater available anywhere. The Ullswater Way section northeast under Raven Crag is a superb opener — the lake close at hand and the fells rising ahead. Arthur's Pike and Bonscale Pike are two of the most rewarding summits of their height in the eastern Lake District, their position directly above Ullswater giving views that a far taller fell might envy. The High Street plateau section is ancient and atmospheric ground — the Roman road below one's feet, the Bronze Age circles of Moor Divock nearby, and the vast ridge stretching south under open skies. Loadpot Hill carries the ruins of a shooting lodge and the best views of the day's high ground. The descent from Wether Hill and the climb over Brownthwaite Crag to Steel Knotts is the walk's most demanding section, the steep slope giving way to a fine rocky summit above Martindale with views that make the effort worthwhile.
