A difficult route in Western Fells. Check the GPS track on Outdooractive for full details of the route, waypoints, and terrain.
Starting Point: Ennerdale car park (NY 085 153)
Terrain: Steep mountain paths, ridge walking, woodland descent, lakeside path.
This is an excellent Ennerdale horseshoe taking in Crag Fell and Iron Crag (a Hewitt) and Caw Fell for outstanding coastal views. The steep initial ascent to Crag Fell is rewarded with superb views throughout. The descent to Black Pots and re-ascent to Iron Crag provides variety, though the gate situation at Iron Crag requires careful attention. Caw Fell offers spectacular views across the Irish Sea to the Isle of Man on clear days, making it a worthwhile addition. The return via woodland and the C2C path along Ennerdale Water provides a pleasant contrast to the mountain terrain. A rewarding Lake District walk combining challenging ascents with excellent ridge walking and magnificent views.
