A moderate route in Brecon Beacons. Check the GPS track on Outdooractive for full details of the route, waypoints, and terrain.
Starting Point: Car park at SN 732 187
Terrain: Beacons Way, South Wales Traverse, good clear paths (mostly), potholes section, rocky section (not easiest to find initially), boggy valley crossing, care needed in places.
This is a rewarding circular walk in the Brecon Beacons taking in two Hewitts of equal height via the Beacons Way and South Wales Traverse. The initial steep climb quickly levels out and leads to Garreg Lwyd with 360-degree views of the eastern Brecons and southwest Wales. The good path continues east along the Beacons Way via Foel Fraith and through an interesting potholes section. The Beacons Way turns left and continues for a good distance north to Garreg Las, where views stretch to the western Brecons, Fan Brycheiniog, and Fan Hir. The South Wales Traverse is a bit rocky and not the easiest to find initially but quickly becomes a clear track. The route includes a boggy valley crossing where care is needed to stay close to the path, but walking improves as height is gained on Moel Gornach's flank. The old lime workings and quarries with their preserved buildings provide fascinating industrial heritage to explore before the path rounds back to the start. A good walk combining two Hewitt summits with excellent views and interesting historical features.
