A moderate route in Yorkshire Dales. Check the GPS track on Outdooractive for full details of the route, waypoints, and terrain.
Starting Point: Roadside parking by Yordas Cave (SD 706 790)
Terrain: Good clear paths, Bullpot Bank, final steep section to ridge, boggy in places, wild walking, steep descent (use wall as guide), track (not best at start, improves), long road walk.
This is an excellent circular walk in the Yorkshire Dales taking in two Hewitts and a County Top, with the option to explore the historic Yordas Cave. The eighteenth-century natural curiosity became a show cave in the nineteenth century and was visited by William Wordsworth, now popular with cavers and walkers. A good torch or headtorch is essential if exploring. The good clear path leads to Bullpot Bank and a final steep section gains the ridge. Gragareth Hewitt offers fine views weather permitting, though we encountered low cloud. The path continues north following the wall, boggy in places, to Green Hill County Top with great views in good conditions. Great Coum Hewitt, the highest point of the walk, rewards with more great views weather permitting. The wild walking descent is steep but the wall provides a guide - stay close to it all the way down. The track is poor initially but improves as it curves past Blea Gills and High Pike. A long road walk over Cluttering Gill Bridge and through Kingsdale Head completes the circuit. A rewarding walk combining cave exploration, two Hewitts, a County Top, and varied terrain.
