A thoroughly enjoyable ridge walk above St John's in the Vale, done on the same day as Walla Crag and making for a satisfying pair of short Lake District outings despite the persistent cloud. The climb through Wren Crag gets the legs working early and the ridge northwards via Long Band, the tarn — where the ducks were very clearly having the best of the day — Moss Crag and High Rigg itself is varied and always interesting underfoot. High Rigg sits at a modest 357 metres but earns its Wainwright status honestly; in clear conditions the views across St John's in the Vale to Blencathra and the Northern Fells in one direction and the Helvellyn range in the other are as good as anything in this corner of the Lakes. The descent to St John's in the Vale and the return south along the clear path past Rake How to Low Bridge End Farm make for a relaxed and enjoyable conclusion, with the promise of refreshments at the farm a welcome incentive on the return leg.
