A moderate route in Other Wales. Check the GPS track on Outdooractive for full details of the route, waypoints, and terrain.
Starting Point: Bridge parking at SH 952 300 (or alternative old quarry parking at SH 951 296, adding approximately 400m to the walk)
Terrain: Tracks, ridge walking, grass and marshy land, forest paths, felled forestry areas (difficult), optional Nuttall summits
This is an excellent circular walk taking in two Hewitts with the option of adding two Nuttalls for peak baggers. The route climbs steadily up the ridge over grass and marshy land before reaching Pen y Boncyn Trefeilw with great views weather permitting. The track continues past optional Nuttall Stac Rhos to Foel Cedig Hewitt, again offering great views in good conditions. An optional out-and-back to Y Groes Fagl Nuttall is easily accessible from the main route. The descent on the great forest path is straightforward, but a critical route decision must be made: do not take the tempting footpath shown on the map at SH 961 303. I made this mistake and found hard walking through felled forestry with uneven ground and no real path. The recommended alternative is to stay on the good track to SH 956 307 and approach from there, avoiding the difficult section entirely. A rewarding walk combining two Hewitt summits with good tracks and optional Nuttall diversions for those who want them.
