A easy route in Warwickshire. Check the GPS track on Outdooractive for full details of the route, waypoints, and terrain.
Starting Point: End of Watery Lane, Sherbourne (SP 261 622)
Terrain: Tunnel under A46, tracks, footpaths around fields, Shakespeare Avon Way, Canada Lane, Snitterfield Lane (1.5 miles), field paths, stile, VERY BUSY A46 (dangerous crossing), village roads, alternative safer route available.
This is a rewarding but complex circular walk from Sherbourne requiring careful navigation and featuring a critical safety decision at the A46 crossing. The route begins through the tunnel under the A46 before following tracks and footpaths to New Barn Farm, where a critical right turn at SP 249 625 must not be missed - we ended up fighting through Ardenhill Spinney when the mapped track proved non-existent, not a great experience. The Shakespeare Avon Way provides good walking to Norton Lindsay, where Snitterfield Lane features 3 blue plaques in quick succession remembering WW1 fallen soldiers, continuing for approximately 1.5 miles to Heath End. The footpath to Northbrook saw us wander off after missing a right turn, though finding the way back proved easy. Field crops forced an alternative route around the edge before rejoining the Shakespeare Avon Way down to the A46, where the critical decision awaits. The main route crosses this very busy dual carriageway with very fast-moving cars - it took me approximately 10 minutes to find safe gaps, and this is ONLY RECOMMENDED for walkers confident in their ability to cross safely. The ALTERNATIVE SAFER ROUTE retraces to SP 246 616, skims Snow Hill's wood edge, and returns via New Barn Farm, avoiding the dangerous crossing entirely. Those brave or confident enough to cross the A46 continue via Fulbrook Lane past Church Farm, taking the first left through the village. A great walk despite its complexity and the major crossing decision required.
