🚗 Getting There

Starting Point: Donard Park car park, Newcastle (SB 461 858)

⚠️ Mountain Safety — Read Before You Go

Terrain: Park path, Granite Trail, riverside path through woodland, open mountain path, river crossing, steep mountain ascent, Mourne Wall, summit NAVIGATION NOTE: This is a there-and-back route on a single clear path throughout. Navigation is straightforward — simply follow the main path up and retrace on the descent. The route is popular and well-walked; on most days there will be plenty of other walkers heading the same way. As long as you stick to the main path you will not go wrong. Also note I have used UK grid references throughout this description, if you are unfamiliar with these they can easily be converted into the OS Ireland referencing system. TERRAIN WARNING: The ascent is long and relentless from the col to the summit. The upper mountain is fully exposed and the summit can be cold, windy and cloud-covered even on days that look promising from below. Wear and carry appropriate mountain clothing and footwear regardless of conditions in Newcastle.

💡 Tony's Notes

A magnificent and memorable mountain day from Newcastle — one of the great hill walks of Ireland. The route up the Glen River valley is beautifully judged: the forest section is quiet and sheltered, the waterfalls a fine early reward, and the gradual transition from woodland to open mountain one of the most satisfying in the Mournes. The views build steadily as height is gained — Newcastle and the bay falling away below, then the mountain bulk of Slieve Donard filling the sky ahead, and finally the full Mourne panorama opening up from the col. The Mourne Wall at the col is a landmark in every sense, and the final pull to the summit, though steep, is short enough to feel within reach from the moment you step onto it. Slieve Donard itself — cold, exposed and magnificent when we were up there — is a summit that earns its reputation. The return down the Glen River valley, all downhill on a clear path, is as enjoyable as the ascent. A thoroughly rewarding day out in wonderful mountain country.
