A varied and entertaining urban-fringe circular from Wythall Heath, threading its way through golf courses, ancient woodland, nature reserves and Victorian reservoir lakes in a surprisingly diverse and enjoyable 12.5 km. The outward leg via Clowes Wood and the railway crossing to Terry's Pool is a pleasant introduction to the walk's character — a landscape that constantly surprises with the quality of its wildlife and the variety of its terrain despite its proximity to the urban edge. Terry's Pool, created from a Victorian railway-era clay pit, is a genuine nature reserve gem, and the Earlswood Lakes that follow — built to feed the Stratford-upon-Avon Canal — are a fascinating piece of industrial heritage as well as a fine walking environment. The concrete walkway above Windmill Pool is a quirky highlight, and the path through the woods past the burnt-out buildings and old adventure park adds an unexpectedly atmospheric note. The navigation challenge at Rumbush Farm — where an uncut crop forces a field-edge detour — is the kind of honest field difficulty that makes these descriptions genuinely useful.
