Malham Cove & Janet's Foss

A classic Yorkshire Dales circular taking in three of the region's most celebrated natural features โ€” the spectacular limestone amphitheatre of Malham Cove, the dramatic waterfalls of Gordale Scar, and the beautiful Janet's Foss waterfall and pools. Outstanding photo opportunities throughout, completed with a well-earned pint and packet of crisps in Malham village.

Calf Top from High View Barn

The walk that introduced Hewitt-bagging โ€” England and Wales's smallest mountain, and England's newest. Having finished the Wainwrights and wondering what to do next, this turned out to be the hill visible from the back of a rental house on a lads' trip away. The rest is history. A memorable circular with personal significance quite out of proportion to Calf Top's modest profile.

Gragareth & Great Coum Circular

An excellent circular combining two Hewitts and a County Top, starting near the historic Yordas Cave โ€” an 18th-century natural curiosity visited by William Wordsworth, now popular with cavers. Gragareth and Great Coum (the walk's highest point) reward with fine views in good conditions. The steep wild descent uses the wall as a guide all the way down.

Wild Boar Fell (Hewitt), Sand Tarn & Swarth Fell (Hewitt)

Two Hewitts bagged on a wonderful, fairly easy walk above Mallerstang, with Sand Tarn as a fine midway reward. Wild Boar Fell's broad summit plateau and the views across the Eden Valley and towards the Pennines make this one of the more satisfying Hewitt days in this part of the Dales. The Royal Air Force also made an appearance.

Fell Head (Hewitt) Circular from Howgill Lane

A circular from Howgill Lane across Whin End and up to Fell Head. The original plan included continuing the ridge all the way to The Calf โ€” but the weather was appalling and it wasn't worth it. Fell Head already bagged as a Hewitt on a previous walk with no views either. The Howgills saved for a better day, when this smooth-sided valley country will show what it can do.
